new intranet

September 14th, 2004 No comments

Well I finally rolled out the new intranet at work last night. So far, it seems to be going pretty well. I’m using a wiki-based software package, so I can recruit people from each department to assist with keeping the content up to date. The new intranet also has the typical forum/blog/news features, which have already been useful. The only issues that I have heard about so far were minor permissions issues that I was able to fix easily.

In other news, I just discovered, much to my delight, that Happy Apple is going to be playing at the Artists’ Quarter October 1st and 2nd. I’m there! For those of you that have never heard these guys and seen them live, you need to be there. The group consists of Saxophonist Mike Lewis, Bassist Eric Fratzke, and drummer Dave King (of The Bad Plus fame). They’re not playing a whole lot anymore due to the success of The Bad Plus and their tour.

Recently I’ve discovered a really good resource for downloading live recordings of bands. Etree has been around for a long time on the internet, helping to facilitate the trading of live concert recordings. In the past, all the distribution has been done either via (very crowded) ftp servers or by sending CD-R’s via snail mail. Well recently, with the increasing popularity of the BitTorrent p2p protocol, they’ve started up a BitTorrent tracker for trading/downloading live shows. You can find the tracker here. I’ve been having a ball lately exploring new bands, and listening to live concerts of my favorite bands. Check it out!

Oh – and if your going to be downloading any shows, I highly suggest the excellent BT client, Azureus.

packing

September 13th, 2004 No comments

Gotta love packing, huh? For those of you that don’t know, we’re in the process of buying a new (to us) house. This is great and all, but it requires much packing/unpacking and lots of other rigamarole. Last night I packed up all of my brewing stuff :-(. In anticipation of this move, I haven’t brewed at all this summer – how sad is that? You can bet that I’ll get back on the homebrew bandwagon ASAP to test out my new garage once we get moved in.

I’m off to the links…

We had a great day celebrating my birthday yesterday…we met my parents at a small private game farm up in Avon, MN (just north of St. Cloud). Since it’s not pheasant season yet, we had to go to the game farm. Dakota performed wonderfully, although we had to take frequent breaks to let her cool down. It got up to about 75 degrees, which gets a bit warm for the dogs. We ended up only getting four birds, one of which we weren’t able to recover.

After hunting, we met Todd and Dane in St. Cloud for supper, after which we proceeded to a park for the present-opening. I recieved a shiny new set of golf clubs! I used to golf a bit before college, but haven’t done it much since then. However recently, I’ve had a desire to get back into it, so I had mentioned to Meghan a few times that I was interested in getting a set of clubs. Well, she remembered my request, and arranged with the two sets of parents to get me a set of clubs. I’m thrilled! It’s gonna be very tempting to stop by the U of M driving range every morning on the way to work :-)

You can see pictures of the day here.

Sweet! After surprisingly little work, I was able to get mysql replication going between our production webserver in Minneapolis and our backup webserver, located at an undisclosed location :-).
