Myth what?
Posted on November 22nd, 2004 by erik
Well I’m taking my first foray into the MythTV world today. I have an oldish (500 MHz) laptop with gentoo installed that I’m going to try it out on. For the time being, I’m only going to use the mythmusic and mythweather modules (and also a picture browser, if they have one), as I really have no need for PVR functionality. The laptop, a Dell CPx has an s-video out port, so I’m hoping I’ll be able to get myth to display on that so I can display it on my TV. If it all works out, I’ll purchase an IR reciever/remote and get lirc set up so I can control the tunez from the couch.
Wish me luck!
I’ve been thinking about playing around with this as well, mostly so I can get an HDTV tuner card and put it in an old PC and use it as a PVR. Do you not watch any TV that you don’t need PVR functionality? ;-)
The laptop’s a great idea too… should be quieter and much more decor-friendly for a living area. I look forward to seeing how it progresses! Good luck!
Thanks! If it works well, I’m planning on putting together a more appropriate box (i.e. not a laptop). I have a 1U rackmount case with power supply that would probably work well. I figure if I end up doing that, I might as well put a tuner card in it and make it a full-blown tivo-killer.
I have a myth box running (well, was running until I decided to upgrade it and haven’t finished) for around a couple years now, and it has worked pretty well (with a hardware encoder card). I’ve heard the new versions are a lot better. I haven’t really used it much at all in the past year or so, mainly because I only really watch one show, and that’s in HD and at a time I can watch it, so why bother recording it in SD? I’m debating getting the HD card though and trying it out, especially since I’ve been told the new versions are better.
