surround sound + BoB = happiness

On Friday, I recieved my new Onkyo home theater system. You can imagine how excited I was get get it home, set it up, and “kick the tires” so to speak. Unfortunately, I couldn’t really crank it due to Meghan needing to go to sleep early, but Saturday afternoon I pulled out all the stops. I sorted through my smallish DVD collection, and decided that an episode of Band of Brothers would be a decent test of the system. I decided to put in Part 6, Bastogne, which depicts a bitter winter battle in the forests of Bastogne, Belgium. Hearing it in surround sound for the first time was amazing. I’m really happy with the system, though I’ll be even more excited about it when I’m able to get it set up properly in the basement once I finish remodelling down there.

I’m gonna have to have a Band of Brothers marathon soon, I believe.

where’s the snow???

Come on - it’s the middle of November, for heaven’s sake. I have two snowblowers that I’m dying to try out!

In other news, we just ordered one of these for work. Up until this point, we haven’t been doing any spam filtering on our mail, and it’s high time that we implemented something. We tossed around a bunch of options - Postini, exchange plugins, homebrew de-spaminating, etc, but it seemed like the barracuda device was the best option. Inside, it’s just basically an AMD-based PC. It’s running some flavor of linux along with spamassassin. It has a ton of very useful features that I’m excited to try out - and I’m especially looking forward to not hearing complaints from everyone about the spam issue. (as a sidenote, I *rarely* recieve spam to my account…perhaps people need to be a bit more careful with where they post their email, but I digress) So anyways - I’m excited. Hopefully the unit will arrive next week and then we can get it set up and running the week after Thanksgiving.

Peace out, y’all.

Executive decision

As I told Jed over IM today, I made an executive decision today that I’m going to start listening to Christmas music. So there. Nobody can call me a Scrooge this year for not being in the Christmas spirit.

The Incredibles

Wow! I just returned from the late showing of The Incredibles. Wow! What a great movie. As you probably know, it’s another one of Pixar’s dynamite CG films, though it’s of a much different character than their previous films (Toy Story I and II, A Bug’s Life, Monsters Inc., Finding Nemo). This one is clearly geared toward the adult audience as it’s a full-blown action thriller. Not only was the animation top-notch, but also the storyline and portrayal therof is excellent. I’ll probably be going to see this one in the theaters again before I purchase the DVD. I’d highly recommend it if you get the chance to see it!

more denial from MS

Check this CNET article. Microsoft appears to think that Internet Explorer is “no less secure than any other browser out there”. Yup. Sounds like the Microsoft PR folks have been hanging around with Baghdad Bob, the former Iraqi Minister of Disinformation a bit too much lately.
