perl zealots

February 28th, 2005 7 comments

Okay – I’ve always known that there are some rather intense perl zealots out there. Only today did I realize how fanatical they can become.

Case in point.

This guy made a linux distro in which the only compiled piece of code is the linux kernel itself. The rest of the OS is written in perl. I don’t quite know what to say in response to this except…”Wow”.

darn it, 89.3!

Okay – there are way too many excellent bands out there. In the last two days, I’ve heard three tracks on The Current that, upon further investigation, have turned up three incredible bands, all of which are now on my top 10 list…here’s the rundown:

  • Lemon Jelly – this group consists of two british DJs. They specialize in downtempo, groovy, chill out-type music. Upon hearing their track, “Only Time”, played on 89.3, I was instantly hooked.
  • Kaki King – this 25 year old dame is one of the most innovative acoustic guitar players I’ve heard. It’s hard even to nail down what genre she fits in. Sort of a cross between Leo Kottke and Michael Hedges. Really cool stuff. As an added bonus, she’s playing at the Dakota on Tuesday. The verdict’s still up as to whether or not I’m going to attend the concert.
  • BossaCucaNova – these guys are a group that takes old Brazilian jazz standards and remixes them electronic-stylee. BossaCucaNova’s front man (if you can call it that) is Roberto Menescal, whose father was a very well-known brazilian jazz stalwart.

So there you go…thank goodness for my Rhapsody subscription, otherwise I’d be hurtin for money, having to buy all of these CDs :-)

MPR

February 25th, 2005 No comments

Well this morning was perhaps one of the earliest morning for me that I remember…I answered phones during the 5:30-9:00 shift of the MPR fund drive. Overall, it was a really good experience, and I’ll surely do it again….perhaps even for this fund drive, if I’m able to convince myself to get up that early again. My alarm went off this morning at 4. That was pretty rough. On the bright side, I got to drink lots of really great coffee – I’m not sure where they got it from, but I think it was one of the several free-trade coffee vendors in the metro. Also, I met Dale Connelly, which was pretty cool. He wandered into the phone room after The Morning Show went off the air at nine o’clock.

In the 3.5 hours that I was answering phones, I estimate that I took 15-20 calls. So I wasn’t busy the whole time, but just enough to keep me awake :-). The only out of the ordinary call that I took was from a guy that sounded like he was high on some sort of narcotic and was calling from what sounded like a pet store. The guy actually made a very generous contribution, and was *very* enthusiastic about The Current, but man, he could hardly put a sentence together. Oh well. I’m glad he called in to contribute.

Well I had better get back to work…have a great friday, everyone!

I have just decided that my next home will be here. Perfect for a person like myself, who has some phengophobic tendencies.

only on wikipedia

Apparently, Wikipedia had an acute cessation of electron flow today, causing some data corruption. On the placeholder page they put up while they were restoring data has a rather well-worded title summarizing their plight.

Here’s a screenshot in case you miss it.
