ahh - smell the clean air

Mark and I strolled over to Cuzzy’s today for lunch to commemorate the first day of the smoking ban. Wow - was it ever nice. They had removed all of the ashtrays, and there was just a tinge of stale smoke smell in the air. After a week or two, I’m sure that all remnants of the smoke will be gone. w00t!

NB Honey Weisen

This is a standard American Wheat w/ a bit o’ Honey. Should (theoretically) turn out similar to Leinie’s Honey Weiss.

Fermentables

  • 6 lbs. Wheat LME

Boil Additions

  • 1 oz. Tettnang (60 mins)
  • 1 lb. Clover Honey (1 min)

Yeast

  • Wyeast 1010 - American Wheat

Notes

  • 3/30/05 - Made starter.
  • 3/31/05 - Jed came over and we brewed in the garage. OG 1044, a bit low I guess, as the target OG was 1048. Pitched a 600 mL starter at 10:00 PM.
  • 4/1/05 - April fools!!! Okay seriously…fermentation is progressing nicely - should start blowing off before noon.
  • 4/14/05 - Transferred to secondary. Gravity: 1.009. By my calculations, that’s about 5.5% ABV. Tasted pretty good - nothing extraordinary, but it’ll be very drinkable. I’ll probably leave it in the secondary for another week and then bottle.
  • 7/20/05 - Yep - it’s been a while :-) I finally got this bottled tonight. FG: 1.007.

The end is nigh.

…of smoking in restaurants/bars anyways.

See here for a rundown of all the local smoking bans. This is a great thing - it’ll be really nice to be able to go out for a drink or go to a restaurant for lunch and not stink like stale cigarrette smoke for the rest of the day, not to mention the health benefits…

Supposedly there *is* sun…somewhere

Well saturday, we’re off to Florida for a week. Meghan and I are going to my parents’ timeshare in Orlando, which is going to be a blast. As far as I know, we have no plans other than to sit by the pool and relax. I’m *very* excited about that. I’ll be posting pictures of our vacation as I take them…

Have a great week, everyone! Oh, and if any of you are around the cities next weekend, and need someone to have Easter dinner with, Meghan and I would love to have you at our place…just drop me an email!

Peace.

speaking of not being irish…

…Yesterday, I posted a comment to Janna’s blog, sympathizing with her non-irishness. In light of this, I’d like to bring your attention to a great article that was on the front page of the Pioneer Press local section yesterday, written by Laura Billings. In it, she talks about the plight of those of us who are Irish…but only by marriage. I’d normally link directly to the article, but in this case, the Pioneer Press requires that you create an account to read the article. So click below to read the full text.
