rotors

Well I successfully installed new front rotors in Meghan’s car this evening. Feels great to do stuff like that, cause you know that if you brought it to the shop, you not only would have to pay shop labor costs (~$70/hour), but they’d likely talk you into replacing the pads, rotors, and calipers as well. You’d be out $300 before you knew it. The rotors I put on tonight cost $30 apiece. Whammo.

I started the process on the passenger side (no reason). It was well rusted on, so I had to go at it with a cylinder of MAPP gas for around 30 minutes before the rust let loose. After that, it went smoothly. I had that wheel finished within another 15 minutes, then proceeded to the driver’s side. That one, thankfully, came right off, and I completed that side in about 20 minutes. Later tonight (after buffalo chicken on the grill) I’ll take ‘er for a test drive to make sure that 1) the brakes work and 2) the wheels don’t fall off.

3 days

Well folks, I’m outie. Hope you all enjoy your 3-day weekend!

Put Down the Muffin

So last night, on a whim, I went to see Put Down the Muffin at Mario’s Keller Bar with my brother Todd. The bassist for PDTM’s name is Bruce Balgaard. He’s the former worship leader at Open Door, and I’ve played with him several times at church, so I’ve know for a while that Bruce is an incredible musician. PDTM is a quartet - drums, keys, bass, electric guitar. Their genre can best be described as acid jazz funk. Several of their songs are very MMW-esque. So anyways, the show was an absolute blast. They were able to strike a rather good balance between intense funk, soaring solos, and abstract interludes. I’ll surely be checking them out again soon.

P.S. Their first CD, “The Rest of Right Now”, is in my iTunes for those of you that are interested. (sorry to all non-logic employees). As is usually the case with this type of music, the CD doesn’t do them justice. You gotta hear ‘em live.

Edit: Last night, Bruce was playing a gorgeous Bogart bass guitar. Sorry, I can’t find a link to the manufacturer of Bogart basses right now. The only thing I know about bogart is that they’re in Germany, and that they make (very expensive) custom carbon-fiber basses.

that silly slashdot

Saw something rather funny tonight….errr…this morning. It appears that slashdot’s rate limiting software got the best of them. See the “Ask Slashdot” section, top right in this screenshot.

Edit…
The original post was published around 0100 hours today. It’s now 0815, and I fully expected them to have this fixed by now, but nope, I guess not.

DC Pilot’s licence revoked

See the source article here.

So unless you haven’t heard, there were two people in the plane that flew into restricted airspace surrounding Washington, D.C. last week. One was Jim Shaeffer, a flight instructer, and his student, Troy Martin. Martin had less than 30 hours of flight time under his belt when the incident occurred. At no time during the whole ordeal, did Shaeffer do his duty as the instructor to take control of the plane back from his student to remove them from the situation. Nor had Shaeffer satisified several prerequisites needed to carry passengers. I, for one, have zero sympathy for this guy, and I hope he is never able to get his pilot’s license back. Sorry if I sound harsh, but geez.

Oh, and by the way, from what I can tell from the article, when the plane got lost, they were ~40 miles away from where they thought they should be. I wonder how in the world that’s possible with today’s GPS technology.
