A little tuesday evening wardriving…
After being inspired by a little hack that my coworker Kurt showed me, I went on a little wardrive tonight around Blaine, the result of which is a KML file, which you can import into Google Earth. Feel free to download the file and give it a try…pretty cool stuff. I drove around for about a litte over an hour and located 266 APs. Of those found, roughly half were unsecured…which actually took me by surprise. From the few past wardrives I’ve done, I’ve come to expect that only a quarter of the access points are secured.
That’s good stuff! I’m guessing a GPS was involved?
Interesting to see that you found “archie_upstairs” and “archie_downstairs” but didn’t find my AP. Does security affect if you can see mine or not?
It’d be cool if they had different colors for open vs secured. I’m curious how you went about this as well.. hooked up a GPS to your laptop?
It’d also be nice to have some consolidated file for certain regions that you can import it before you leave for that location, and be able to cache the information in your laptop before you leave for a trip.
Does security affect if you can see mine or not?
No – not really…I’m guessing I didn’t drive close enough to your place, since you’re at the far end if your building, away from the road.
I’m guessing a GPS was involved?
Yep…I just ran Netstumbler w/ my GPS plugged in.
