Bjorn’s Vocab
Posted on March 5th, 2007 by erik
It’s been a while since I’ve posted about Bjorn. It’s time I remedy that today, with a list of all the current words he’s able to sign:
(these are in no particular order)
- all done
- milk
- puppy
- cracker
- cheese
- daddy (which he actually uses generically for any caretaker)
- cow
- pig
- cat
- help
- pick me up (which he uses also to let you know when he’s ready to get down)
- blanket
- please
- grapes
- tired
- diaper
- telephone
- play
- bottle
- drink
- wash
- book
- ball
- chair/sit
- bye bye
- hello
- light
- toothbrush
- sheep
- tiger
- sock
- uh-oh
- where
- blanket (he says “tsi-tsi”. don’t ask us.)
That’s all I can remember right now…I’m surely missing a few, though. I’ll add ‘em as they come to me. Have I mentioned that baby sign language is amazing? Okay - just wanted to make sure :-)
Also add:
bye bye
hello
light
toothbrush
sheep
tiger
sock
uh-oh
Where
He tried ‘music’ today and is close to the sign
**fun to note the verbal word for Blanket is “tsi-tsi” (don’t ask us)
We are so proud!
Ahh - thanks for the additions. They’ve been added to the list.
Hey Erik!
So…I found your blog again through Liz Verhage’s blog! It’s been a long time! I just wanted to say “thanks so much” for the thoughtful birthday card! It was really great to hear from you guys! I love looking through all of the Bjorn pictures.
Have a great weekend!

Wow - so you know Liz, huh? That’s awesome. She and Peter were in our small group before they moved back to Chicago…
So did you guys get a book that shows the signs so they’re somewhat universal (and you don’t have to think them up!)? Anne and I decided a few years ago we’d do the same thing - glad to see it’s successful (yet again!) I can only imagine how much less frustrating it could be to know what he needs.
Take care!
-Tim
When we first started, Meghan checked a book out from the library that talked about some of the basics - what to do and what not to do sort of thing. Since then, most of our signs have been loosely based off of the official ASL signs. There is an ASL video browser/dictionary available here.
That’s usually our go-to place when looking for a new sign to teach him.
