When we first started, Meghan checked a book out from the library that talked about some of the basics - what to do and what not to do sort of thing. Since then, most of our signs have been loosely based off of the official ASL signs. There is an ASL video browser/dictionary available here.

That's usually our go-to place when looking for a new sign to teach him.

So did you guys get a book that shows the signs so they're somewhat universal (and you don't have to think them up!)? Anne and I decided a few years ago we'd do the same thing - glad to see it's successful (yet again!) I can only imagine how much less frustrating it could be to know what he needs.

Take care!
