Michael Manring + Hyperbass

June 30th, 2008

Michael Manring. Ever heard of him? Check this video – he plays a Zon Hyperbass. This isn’t your normal bass guitar. The hyperbass has a cam/lever system on the four tuning mechanisms in the headstock that allow the player to flip a lever mid-song and drop that string’s tuning anywhere from a half step to a fifth. There’s also a de-tuning mechanism in the bridge that allows the bassist to change the strings’ tunings from that end of the guitar as well.

Enjoy.

February 10th, 2008

From the Kings’ of Convenience song “Misread”:

How come no one told me all throughout history, the loneliest people were the ones who always spoke the truth.
The ones who made a difference by withstanding the indifference.
I guess it’s up to me now, should I take that risk or just smile?

Aguas de Março

October 8th, 2007

One of my favorite songs in the Brazilian jazz genre is Tom Jobim’s Aguas de Março. This song doesn’t tell a story in the typical fashion…rather, it’s a collection of images (one of which is the “waters of march”) that signal the end of summer (Brazil is in the southern hemisphere).

Anyway – today I discovered a great video that was taken in the studio when Tom Jobim and Elis Regina recorded the song for their 1974 CD, Elis & Tom. Enjoy!

Edit: the portuguese lyrics are available here along with an english translation (scroll down).

Umm cool…

Don’t ask me how I stumbled on this.

This dude plays (via recording and looping) all the parts of Bobby McFerrin’s “Don’t Worry, Be Happy” on the Theremin. Niiiiiiice.

Say Shhhhhhh….

May 10th, 2007

Let it be known that Minnesota is the featured article on Wikipedia for May 11th, 2007.

P.S. If you didn’t understand the title for this post, please check out this (sorry – realmedia) as a hint. It’s a recording of the first song aired on The Current when it started broadcasting a little over two years ago.
