I was browsing our company’s MSDN subscriber downloads page this afternoon and noticed that MS has Internet Explorer filed in the “Operating Systems” section of the downloads tree. That’s right…Microsoft puts their Internet Explorer web browser in the same category as the venerable MS-DOS, the ubiquitous Windows XP, and their newest shiny (DRM-laden) OS, Vista. Quite telling, isn’t it?
For those of you that are thoroughly confused at this point, I’ll refer you to two informative Wikipedia articles:
The short version is that a web browser is a (relatively) simple application that allows one to view and interact with web pages. An operating system, on the other hand, is an incredibly complex system that “runs” your computer. Web browsers and Operating systems *should not* be classified in the same category.
Senator Chuck Hagel, speaking on the President’s “surge” plan:
“We better be damn sure we know what we’re doing, all of us, before we put 22,000 more Americans into that grinder.”
It’s about time someone (read: republicans) took a stand on this. As EKM said in an IM conversation today, “It’s really too bad there were no republicans saying that in 2003.” I am, by no means, qualified to know or comment on whether or not it makes military or strategic sense to send in more troops. I just hope that this debate moves forward and that the governing bodies do the hard work of really determining the best course of action.
I had a rather humorous email interchange with an ISP sales guy I’ve been working with for a new branch office. Along with business-class cable internet service, I requested 1 static IP address for the new office. The install date for the service is tomorrow, so I emailed our sales guy this morning to ask if they had allocated the IP address yet:
(IP addresses changed for security purposes)
Hi Ric -
Do you have our static IP address yet? If so, could you please forward it to me?
Thank you
-Erik
Simple enough, right?
Here’s his response:
Spoke to tech support 555-555-1212. They gave me 2541.243.124. Your dns is 52.93.15.211 and 52.93.15.212
Look odd to you? It should…2541.243.124 is not a valid IP address. I replied:
Ric – I think you missed a “.” in that IP address. Could you please clarify?
Thanks-
Erik
It’s easy enough to miss a “.” – I’ve certainly done it plenty of times.
Ric replies:
Spoke to tech support 555-555-1212. They gave me 2541.243.124 is your address. 2541.243.124 is your Static IP Address. Your sub net is 255.255.255.252.
Okay – *now* it’s ON:
Ric -
2541.243.124 is not a vaild IP address. Like the DNS server addresses you gave me, valid IP addresses are “dotted decimal” notation, like xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx. See here for more details:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPv4#Addressing
Please re-check with support and verify the correct address.
…andersonfam.org is back in all its glory and splendor….errr something like that.
The short version is that the OS hard drive of my previous webserver died a very hard death, and I was unable to salvage any data from it. Luckily, most of the data I had on the webserver was stored on a separate hard drive, which is chugging along healthily. The website is mostly back to it’s previous state, minus a few comments (due to my lack of adequate db backups) and minus search engine-friendly URLs (I need to figure out how lighttpd’s incarnation of mod_rewrite works). I know I won’t be able to get the comments back, but hopefully I’ll be able to get mod_rewrite under control in the next few days.
Oh – and the other thing I’m changing is the location of my photo gallery. I’ve moved my pics offsite, over to my smugmug gallery.
